William Lutz, Managing Editor

William Lutz is the Managing Editor for The Lone Star Report, having been a regular contributor to the publication since May, 1998. Lutz has covered many policy issues for LSR, with a particular focus on public education, insurance, and regulatory issues. He authored LSR's May 2002 special issue on the Texas public school finance system. He has written several opinion columns for the Viewpoints page of The Dallas Morning News. He formerly served as a Budget and Tax Policy Analyst with the Institute for Budget and Tax Limitation, an Austin-based fiscal policy research organization. Prior to that, he worked as an editor with Paradigm Media, Inc.

In 1997, Lutz received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Washington where he majored in economics. He also holds a certificate in Global Trade, Transportation, and Logistics Studies. While at UW, Lutz served first as opinion editor -- and later, news editor -- of The Daily of the University of Washington. During his tenure, the paper was named "Best All Around Daily Student Newspaper" by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Lutz is a second-generation Longhorn, earning his bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Texas-Austin in 1994. While a student, Lutz edited The University Review of Texas, an independent monthly journal of student opinion. He is a native of Las Cruces, New Mexico, where his parents still reside.
