Only in Texas does a Democrat in a statewide primary criticize his Democratic opponent for being unfaithful to the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

John Sharp did as much today when his campaign sent out a press release calling on Houston Mayor Bill White to renounce his membership in the nationwide group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Said Sharp: “Mr. White’s war on guns is already making it impossible for him to be elected statewide in Texas. He should immediately disassociate himself from this anti-gun group so he doesn’t also hurt the chances of other Democrats running for public office.”

The press release goes on to say, “A life member of the National Rifle Association, Sharp has a perfect legislative record in support of the Second Amendment, owns dozens of guns, and is an avid hunter.”

See the full press release here.

Of course, White took some issue with the release. His campaign sent LSR a response, saying that White already resigned the group before Sharp’s press release was sent out, because the focus of the group expanded beyond its original intent of preventing the sale of stolen guns.

Yet again, John Sharp isn’t shooting straight,” the Bill White campaign’s response reads. “Bill White has always been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Bill White resigned and is no longer associated with Mayors Against Illegal Guns. … As a U.S. Senator Bill White will fight for what’s right and that includes Texans’ gun rights and strong support for the Second Amendment.”

The statement goes on to say, “He believes we do need enforcement of laws focused on gangs who steal guns, which is a particular issue in cities across the country. He does not believe we need new laws on the books for that purpose.”
