(Updated at 1:36 pm to include Gov. Rick Perry's official statement. Updated at 3:12 p.m. to include U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's statement.)
Republican gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina made an appearance on the Glenn Beck Show this morning, and her answer has been the talk of Texas Republicans -- especially on Twitter and Facebook. Beck asked Medina, "Do you believe the government was any way involved with the bringing down of the World Trade Center on 9/11?"
Medina responded: "I don't have all of the evidence there, Glenn. So I'm not in a place; I have not been out publicly questioning that. I think some very good questions have been raised in that regard. There are some very good arguments, and I think the American people have not seen all the evidence there. So I have not taken a position on that."
Employees of the Gov. Rick Perry campaign have forwarded this clip on Twitter and Facebook. LSR received an official statement from Perry today at 1:36 p.m.: "Today's comments were an insult to the thousands of Americans who lost loved ones on 9/11 and the military men and women who are overseas protecting our country. President Bush worked tirelessly to protect our nation from additional terrorist attacks and anyone who would suggest 9/11 is a conspiracy involving the Bush administration should be ashamed."
LSR also received the following statement from Medina's other primary opponent, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison: “I know exactly who was responsible for the horrific attacks on September 11th – Al Qaeda terrorists who declared war on America. To suggest otherwise is an affront to the men and women who are sacrificing their lives to root out the terrorists in Afghanistan and around globe. Ever since that tragic day, I have fought tirelessly to ensure that we hunted down the Islamic extremists who target our nation. No one stood closer to President Bush and Vice President Cheney in their efforts to defeat the terrorist threat to our freedom.”
Later -- after the show -- the Medina campaign issued a statement clarifying her position: "I was asked a question on the Glenn Beck show today regarding my thoughts on the so-called 9/11 truth movement. I have never been involved with the 9/11 truth movement, and there is no doubt in my mind that Muslim terrorists flew planes into those buildings on 9/11. I have not seen any evidence nor have I ever believed that our government was involved or directed those individuals in any way. No one can deny that the events on 9/11 were a tragedy for all Americans and especially those families who lost loved ones."
Given the strong feelings people, and particuarly Republican primary voters feel about 9/11, this could well be a game-changer. Beck claimed Medina's comments were "the fast way back to four percent [in the polls]." Rather than try to characterize Medina's comments ourself, we post a link below to a youtube clip of Beck's program:
The full Medina statement is as follows:
"I was asked a question on the Glenn Beck show today regarding my thoughts on the so-called 9/11 truth movement. I have never been involved with the 9/11 truth movement, and there is no doubt in my mind that Muslim terrorists flew planes into those buildings on 9/11. I have not seen any evidence nor have I ever believed that our government was involved or directed those individuals in any way. No one can deny that the events on 9/11 were a tragedy for all Americans and especially those families who lost loved ones.
"The question surprised me because it's not relevant to this race or the issues facing Texans. This campaign has always been about private property rights and state sovereignty. It is focused on the issues facing Texans. It is not a vehicle for the 9/11 truth movement or any other group.
"The real underlying question here, though, is whether or not people have the right to question our government. I think the fact that people are even asking questions on this level gets to the incredible distrust career politicians have fostered by so clearly taking their direction from special interests instead of the people, whether it's Rick Perry and his HPV mandate or Kay Hutchison and voting for the bank bailout. It is absolutely the right and duty of a free people to question their government. Texas does not need another politician who tells you what you want to hear, then violates your liberties and steals your property anyway. I fully expect to be questioned and to be held accountable as Governor, and that's the underlying issue here: should people be questioning their government. And the answer is yes, they should be."

the more she talks, the worse it gets. Her answer gave the game away. Beck was not doing 'irrelevant' things, he was following up on emails he'd received about her stand on this issue and had every right to ask her about it. I sat expecting her to say simply "no, I don't believe anything like that." and she DID NOT say no.
This opens up all sorts of wierd ideas about Jews and Bush and conspiracy theory that I CANNOT BELIEVE are floating around in her head. Its a shock.
I took one afternoon, one day a long time ago, to investigate this 'truther' thing and it's just a load of hogwash. What happened happened, and we know why. To say 'the public hasn't gotten all the info' is disingenuous. To say 'questions remain' is freaky. On 9 11, terrorists hijacked planes and crashed them into buildings with full tanks of fuel, with disastrous consequences. Nobody knew and withheld info, nobody helped them plan, nobody removed all the Jews from the buildings, nobody fired a missile at the pentagon, all total hogwash.
Myself, I still want to see that darned old birth certificate, which would make Beck call me nasty names... :-) But I"m fully with him on this. Medina has given away her campaign. Perry will win now for sure. Much as I dislike him, he is the least dislikeable on our side now.

That's an unequivocal statement.
That's what the candidate believes. Anything else is Rick Perry and Dave Carney blowing smoke.

No. What she said was "I don't have all of the evidence there, Glenn. So I'm not in a place; I have not been out publicly questioning that. So she is either a nutjob or playing to nutjobs. Either way she is toast. Only batguano crazy nutjobs will vote for her.

listen to the interview rather than reading the transcript or taking the media's word for it. you'll hear that she NEVER said she's a 9/11 truther. and she NEVER said anybody in her camp has even mentioned the 9/11 tragedy. don't be sheeple, listen for yourselves. did our govt have anything 2 do with 9/11? hell yes. if another power came here, hunted down our potus, forced a civil war, then put somebody else in power & forced their form of govt on us, we'd probably form a terrorist group too. we'd target military establishments rather than civilians though. we have 2 stay out of other country's politics. if that makes me a 9/11 truther, then so be it. i'd vote for her because she's neither a lawyer nor a bought-and-paid-for career politician. she's raised about $94,000 in small contributions from we the people (unlike bailout kay & the hair) since the interview so she hasn't been derailed. VOTE MEDINA & TAKE BACK OUR STATE!!
