The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 this morning to overturn a city of Chicago ban on personal firearms.
If the ruling had been in favor of upholding the ban, it could have had wide-reaching ramifications for states with strong gun rights laws, such as Texas.
"The U.S. Supreme Court," Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said, "confirmed what Texans have long known: all law abiding Americans have a fundamental right to keep and bear arms -- and cities cannot unconstitutionally limit that right.
"Today's ruling rejected Chicago's argument that cities and towns are above the Constitution and can pass laws that disregard the Second Amendment. The decision marks a victory not only for law-abiding gun owners, but also for the constitutional rights and liberties that our Founders guaranteed to all Americans."
Abbott, a Republican, faces Democrat Barbara Ann Radnofsky in the November general election.
Also today, the High Court decided not to get involved in the infamous Plano ISD "Candy Cane Controversy," where a group of parents attempted to stop the district from regulating when and where students can hand out the striped Christmas candy with associated religious messages. The Fifth Circuit previously upheld the rights of students to distribute the Christian canes.
